Others simply let you breathe. Park Hyatt Tokyo belongs to the second kind, which is why it took me three years to understand how much I love it. The entrance is unremarkable, a quiet corridor in Shinjuku, an elevator that gathers you up and releases you on the 41st floor, and then, without warning, all of Tokyo unfolds beneath you. A lobby that is really a breath The lobby here is called Peak Lounge, and it is made almost entirely of glass. Real bamboo trees stand between the armchairs, and the Japanese afternoon light, soft and slightly grey, pours in and softens everything. I ordered tea, not because I wanted tea but because I wanted a reason to sit. That was the moment I understood this hotel does not sell you a room, it sells you time. Anyone who knows Lost in Translation will recognise the place instantly, and that is part of the charm, but also the trap. It is easy to come here for the photograph. You stay for something else entirely. The room The rooms at Park Hyatt Tokyo are unusually large for Tokyo, a city where a square metre is currency. Dark wood, earth-toned textiles, and a deep bathtub facing a window from which, on clear days, you can see Mount Fuji. I saw it once, on a February morning, and it looked like a painting someone had hung in the window to taunt me. Real luxury, I have learned, is measured not by what is added but by what they manage to remove, noise, effort, the feeling that you must stay alert. The pool beneath the glass On the 47th floor there is a swimming pool beneath a glass dome, and in the morning, while the city still sleeps, I swam in it alone. Below me, Tokyo. Above me, grey skies opening slowly. There was no one there, only the water and my breath, and for twenty minutes I felt the largest city in the world belonged to me. What is not perfect I always promise to write the other side too. The service at Park Hyatt is precise but restrained, and if you are looking for Mediterranean warmth, you will not find it here. This is Japanese hospitality, quiet and dignified, and it takes time to adjust. The price is high even by Tokyo standards, and breakfast, good as it is, does not justify its tag. I eat out. Who it suits If it is your first time in Tokyo and you want thrills, light and neon, you may prefer a younger, more electric hotel. But if you already know the city, if you understand that the real Tokyo hides in the quiet between the noise, Park Hyatt is home. I have returned three times. I will return again.
