Aman Tokyo opened in 2014 as the brand's first urban hotel, and the Australian studio Kerry Hill Architects designed it with a discipline that reads, in the actual space, as pure abundance. The 33rd-floor lobby has cathedral proportions: camphor wood columns, black granite underfoot, and that lantern overhead casting diffused, paper-softened light across surfaces of stone and timber. Seasonal ikebana compositions stand near the floor-to-ceiling windows. The Imperial Palace Gardens are visible in the middle distance, a wide sweep of green amid the financial grid of Chiyoda, and the skyline opens in every direction beyond. The hotel's position is its first luxury and also its most honest: the city is right there, and you are watching it from a remove that feels earned rather than imposed.

The Room

I stayed in a City Suite, 121 square meters of cypress, cedar, and considered calm. Rooms at Aman Tokyo begin at 71 square meters, roughly double the standard luxury room in this city, and the space is used without waste. An engawa-style platform borders the full-height windows, where I spent two mornings with coffee watching the light shift across the skyline in slow increments the street level would never let me notice. The Spa, Tokyo's Largest

The Aman Spa occupies two full floors and is, by floor area, the largest spa in Tokyo. What strikes you first is not the size but the stillness, the particular quiet of a space designed to absorb rather than amplify. The 30-meter pool is clad in black basalt, the water holding the skyline in reflection through glass that runs from floor to ceiling. Onsen-style stone baths look out over Chiyoda at the height where buildings begin to thin. I spent an afternoon here with Shinto misogi purification rituals and traditional kampo herbal treatments. Whether you attach spiritual meaning to these or experience them as a very beautiful bath, the effect is identical: you emerge genuinely different from how you arrived. The yoga studio, the private fitness instruction, the plunge pools, each space is as considered as the next.

At the Table, Musashi and Arva

The dining carries the same philosophy as the architecture: quality over spectacle, intimacy over display.

Musashi is a small miracle. Eight seats at a hinoki cypress counter. A chef with decades given to Edomae-style sushi. I sat there one evening and ate eleven courses over two hours and felt by the end that I had understood something about concentration, what it means to give a single thing absolute dedication. The fish was flawless. The silences between courses were intentional, not awkward. This is a rare and important distinction.

Arva takes a different direction: rustic Italian cooking made with premium Japanese ingredients, served in a high-ceilinged room of soaring concrete columns. It is generous and beautiful and a genuinely surprising pleasure. In memory, though, Musashi occupies a different category entirely, the kind of meal you describe to people who were not there.

On Price and on the Silence

Rooms at Aman Tokyo start at approximately $1,800 per night, with suites rising considerably from there. The hotel ranked 25th in The World's 50 Best Hotels 2025, recognition that reflects not just the space but the consistency with which it delivers on its promise. What you are paying for is not luxury in the conventional sense, there is no gold leaf here, no chandelier theater, but something rarer: a very specific quality of intentional space. Kerry Hill's team placed every window where the light would be interesting. They positioned the bath at the view. They designed a lobby that silences the city below without pretending the city does not exist. For a brand whose identity was built in remote landscapes, this first urban property remains, more than a decade on, its most quietly assured achievement.

Tokyo will be Tokyo the moment the elevator opens at street level. But Aman gives you a floor, literally and figuratively, above the noise. The contrast when you step back into it is so sharp it almost hurts. I have come to think of this as one of the hotel's finest offerings: it makes you understand, with physical clarity, exactly what you are returning to.
