I've made expensive mistakes. A hotel in Lisbon that looked dreamy online turned out to face a highway, no mention of it, not even a hint in the photos. A 'boutique guesthouse' in Tbilisi had twelve reviews on Google, all five stars, all posted within the same week. I've slept through jackhammers, woken to someone else's alarm through paper-thin walls, and once had to ask reception what city I was actually in because the neighborhood made no sense at all. The mistakes taught me everything.

I Start With the Photos, Specifically, What's Missing

Every hotel curates its photography. That's expected. What I look for isn't what they show, it's what they don't. Is there a view from the room? If yes, why is it never shown? Are there windows? What does the hallway look like? Corridors tell you everything: the quality of the carpet, the age of the lighting, the actual square footage they're not mentioning. If all I see is a perfectly styled bed and a spa pool, I get suspicious.

• Street View on Google Maps, I look at the actual block. Is there a bus terminal next to it? A nightclub? A construction site? Google Street View is the most honest travel tool I have.
• Satellite view, I zoom out and check the neighborhood. Green parks nearby? Industrial area? This takes forty seconds and has saved me from multiple bad decisions.
• Recent photos from guests, Not the hotel's own gallery. I go to Google Maps or TripAdvisor and filter for the most recent user-submitted photos. Real photos are unflattering, slightly blurry, and absolutely honest.

How I Read Reviews (Without Losing My Mind)

I don't read five-star reviews. They tell me nothing. I read the three-star and four-star reviews, the ones written by people who liked the place but had one specific complaint. Those complaints are almost always true, and they're almost always the thing that will bother me too.

I also look at the pattern of management responses. A hotel that replies to every negative review with a defensive paragraph, we're sorry you feel that way, tells me everything about how they treat guests in person. A hotel that says we hear you, we've fixed the water pressure in room 14 is honest and operational.

• Recency matters, A hotel from 2019 with great reviews means nothing if they haven't updated since. I check whether reviews exist from the last three months.
• Red flags in language, Phrases like for the price it was fine or the location makes up for it are coded warnings. I translate them literally.
• Volume vs. consistency, A hundred reviews averaging 4.2 is more reliable than twelve reviews averaging 4.9.

Location Is the Whole Story

I ask myself one question: if I come back at midnight and I'm tired and slightly lost, can I get to this hotel safely and without drama? If I can't answer yes, I don't book it.

Being central means different things in different cities. In Tokyo, a hotel twenty minutes by train from the main station is fine, trains run at midnight and cost almost nothing. In a smaller European city, ten minutes from the old town might mean fifteen minutes uphill on cobblestones with a suitcase. Context matters. I always check what's walkable within five minutes and what the public transport actually connects to.

Red Flags I've Learned to Spot Immediately

• No address listed, only a contact us for location message. This is always a bad sign.
• Photos that are only vertical (phone-shot) and never show the room from a full angle.
• Reviews mentioning noise from a nearby venue, even one mention is enough to take seriously.
• A breakfast included note with no actual description of what breakfast is.
• Check-in hours that end at 10pm with no after-hours option explained.
• A reception area that looks dark or unstaffed in every photo, it usually is in reality too.

Why the Arrival Matters More Than Anything

The arrival tells you everything within sixty seconds. Is the lobby at the temperature it should be? Does someone greet you, or do they finish typing before looking up? Do they offer to take your bag? Is there a glass of water, a small welcome note, anything that says we expected you and we're glad you came?

I've stayed in modest hotels that made me feel like a guest and expensive ones that made me feel like an inconvenience. The price tag is not the predictor. The staff is. And you can often tell before you book, call ahead with a simple question. How they answer the phone is exactly how they'll treat you at check-in.

The best hotel I ever stayed in had no Instagram presence. The worst had ten thousand followers and replied to every comment with a heart emoji.

My method isn't foolproof. But it's mine, and it's built from experience, not from algorithms. Take what's useful, leave the rest, and always, always, check what's across the street.
